Tech & Travel Tips: April 2005

Storage Bag

Shoe bag used as storage bag to conserve space in motorhomeIn an effort to conserve space in the motorhome, we found it useful to hang a shoe bag on the outside of our bathroom door. In the pockets we place items that we need during our travels, such as pens, pencils, scissors, staplers, baggies, and other goodies.

Indoor Clothes Hanger

After doing laundry, my wife likes to hang some of our clothing on hangers to finish drying. Not having a convenient place to put them was solved by using an adjustable shower curtain rod placed between two walls in the bathroom.

Privacy Curtains

Curtains for privacy in motorhomeI dislike the feeling that everyone who strolls by our motorhome is looking in at me while I’m slaving over a hot stove cooking dinner or lounging in my recliner. I’ve been told to pull the windshield curtain but I hate the shut-in feeling that results from doing so.

To solve this problem, I made cafe curtains and put them on tension rods that fit from the center windshield divider to the sides. The tension rods wedge into place for a tight fit. Although I made my curtains, you can buy them if you’re not handy with a needle and thread.

I constructed each panel using 90-inch-wide muslin, then sewed a 1½-inch heading over a 1½-inch casing for the rod. The finished length of the panels leaves a nice, open area over the top so that light can enter the motorhome. I drape the panels over the back of the sofa when we’re in transit.

Information Files

I purchased a 9-inch-by-12-inch plastic file box at the local discount store to use with hanging file folders. I divided the files into sections that correspond to our motorhome’s systems: electrical, furnace, air conditioner, refrigerator, range, microwave oven, generator, leveling jacks, towing, and so on. When I find a helpful article about maintaining one of these systems in Family Motor Coaching magazine, I remove it from the book and place it in the file. This information sure comes in handy when there is a problem. One example was a recent article about minimizing electrical woes in the motorhome. It saved me from buying a new circuit board for our water heater. Keep all the info in a handy place.
