Tech & Travel Tips: March 2006

Closet Space

Wire shelves in hanging closetI have adequate hanging space in the wardrobe of my Winnebago, but I needed additional shelf space. Since the hanging closets above the nightstands are narrow, I decided to install wire shelves in them. Now I have plenty of storage for folded shirts, shorts, and sweaters.

Steamy Mirror

Shaving cream to prevent mirror from steaming upIn the close quarters of my motorhome’s bathroom, I had a problem with the mirrors steaming up. I found that smearing shaving cream on the mirror and polishing it with a dry paper towel will keep it from steaming up. If your brand of shaving cream doesn’t work, try Gillette shaving cream.

Trouble-Light Bulbs

If you’re like me, you’re sick and tired of having to replace the light bulb in your trouble light after bumping or accidentally dropping it. To keep from having to do this, replace the incandescent bulbs that contain filaments with fluorescent bulbs that do not have filaments that will break. Since switching to fluorescent bulbs, I have not had to replace the lamp once.

Décor Update

Window décorThis tip involves no sewing “” just pins “” and is easy and fun. Take a trip to a local fabric store and look on the discount table for remnant upholstery pieces to match your coach. I chose neutral beige for the window frame on my motorhome. Now I can change the valance, bedspread, pillows, etc., and “” presto! “” I have a fresh new look.

First, position the material over the window frame. With a Popsicle stick or tongue depressor, push the edges of the fabric between the frame and the wall. Wrap the material to the inside of the window frame and, using straight pins, pin it to the existing fabric underneath.

For a valance, just make a border piece of print material and pin to the existing material every two or three inches along the top. I have changed the décor in my motorhome twice in four years, and it’s so easy!

Squeaky Table

The dinette table in our motorhome has many never-ending loud squeaks and groans. In an attempt to correct this, I used sticky tabs, hook-and-loop fasteners, and foam wedges, but nothing worked.

After putting up new weather stripping around the door, I had several pieces left. I lowered the table and added as many strips along the wall edge of the table as necessary to make the table snug. Weather stripping comes in gray and white and blends in nicely. Next came fixing the unstable table leg. A circular rubber furniture cup was slipped under the leg and now it doesn’t move or make noise either.

Bird Fence

Netting to prevent birds from nesting in RVWhen birds started to build a nest in the engine compartment of my parked motorhome, I stopped the trespassers with fruit tree netting that I purchased at a garden store. By tucking the netting in and using plastic bag ties to hold it securely in place, the results were not unsightly.
