Disaster Assistance Chapter Forming

Dear Editor:
In the aftermath of the disasters that have struck the United States in recent years, FMCA members often have expressed interest in helping in some way. Having a motorhome at the ready provides a unique opportunity to travel to an area and bring one’s own accommodations and supplies while helping in the recovery effort. With this goal in mind, a movement is underfoot to form a disaster assistance chapter in FMCA that would work in tandem with the American Red Cross.

The idea was floated during the Chapter Fair in Pomona, California, and was well-received. In particular, the Freightliner Chassis Owners Club chapter, led by president Ken Hawk, F266431, has expressed willingness to help spearhead the effort. Special thanks go out to Ken and his group.

We are hoping to have more charter members join us and are planning to have a formation meeting during the FMCA convention in Charlotte/Concord, North Carolina, this August. Anyone who signs up at the convention will be considered a charter member. Please check your convention program for details regarding the meeting date and time. We plan to hold elections during that meeting and are seeking members who might be interested in taking important leadership positions in the chapter.

The plan is to have all chapter members obtain the necessary American Red Cross volunteer training that will allow them to be ready and on call to assist in the event of a disaster. Chapter members will need to seek this training through a local Red Cross chapter. The hope is that the FMCA chapter eventually will become large enough that it could diversify into groups so that various parts of the country would be covered as needed.

We motorhome owners have been blessed with the opportunity to travel the United States and to enjoy all that it has to offer. I know many folks seek opportunities to pass the blessings on and thus will be interested in this new chapter. If you won’t be attending the Charlotte/Concord convention but would like to know more about the plans, please contact me via e-mail at gpainter@fmca.com or via voice mail at (800) 544-7062, ext. 604.

Money-Saving Satellite Repair

Dear Editor:
If you are in Florida and need a roof-mounted satellite repaired as I did, try Bill Sidwell in Stuart. He came to my coach and repaired my old unit. It sure saved me the cost of having to replace it.

He is with a company called All Satellite Systems; phone (772) 220-4150.
