More and more motorhome manufacturers are offering “garages” in their coaches, providing owners with the room to haul all of their playthings under one roof.

Forty-something years ago, no one would have thought about building a motorhome that included a garage. At that time, dune buggies made from stripped Volkswagen chassis and Jeeps were the two primary vehicles for off-road motorized sports, with dirt motorcycles and dual-sport motorcycles just making their way onto dealership floors. Jeeps and buggies were towed four wheels down or on flat-bed trailers, and motorcycles went on small multi-railed trailers. But then the issue of security “” or the lack thereof “” reared its ugly head, and off-road enthusiasts began to worry about theft.
The first combination live-aboard/cargo-hauling trailer was called a Smuggler, so for several years toy haulers were called Smuggler-type trailers. Then followed a few knockoffs and look-alikes. Toy-toting trailers kind of withered on the vine through the 1970s and 1980s, and then four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles (ATVs or quads) began to replace the earlier three-wheelers that had proved to be unsafe. The popularity of quads surged, which motivated a few trailer manufacturers to begin making toy haulers again. Through the 1990s and the early half of this decade, a wave of toy-toting trailers tilted the marketplace, coming in all lengths and with both fifth-wheel and pull-type hitches.
Although it took a little longer, the motorhome industry eventually joined the toy-hauling market. At the 2006 Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) show in Louisville, Kentucky, a greater number of motorized toy haulers were shown than before. Perhaps the term I use for these vehicles should be SRV (sport recreation vehicle), the moniker Four Winds International gave to its Fun Mover, the first motorized toy hauler, about 10 years ago.
Actually, the Fun Mover was introduced in 1996. One of Four Winds’ dealers, Cruise America, asked for a unit to use for the Atlanta Summer Olympic Games. They wanted a specially designed motorhome with a cargo area that opened in the back. The video crews could store their equipment in the cargo area, as well as position camera operators to shoot video footage during the Olympic torch run. The motorhome could be driven slowly ahead of the torch carriers while the camera operators sat in the garage area with the cargo door open, filming live-action shots from that vantage point. Four Winds built five Fun Movers for this event.
A new wrinkle in the toy-hauler marketplace that has shown up recently is the manufacture of a matching motorhome and toy-hauling trailer. Several companies “” Fleetwood, Four Winds, Gulf Stream, Silver Crown, Weekend Warrior, and a few custom coach builders such as Featherlite and Renegade-Kibbi “” offer such combinations. In some of these combos, the motorhome is also a toy hauler; in others, only the trailer is a toy hauler. In most cases, however, the two vehicles have similar external and internal décor. These combination units are not only being marketed for toy owners “” especially those with large families and even larger groups of friends “” but also for full-time, on-the-road professionals who need attractive and attention-getting mobile warehouses to carry and display their products.
As interesting and intriguing as these matching motorhomes and trailers might be, we’re here to show you the current crop of motorized toy toters. What follows are descriptions of motorhomes that can haul you and your toys without the need of a tagalong trailer.
The information below was provided by the manufacturers. While every attempt has been made to present accurate information, keep in mind that continued vehicle improvements and production-line changes could alter the information at any time.
