Winter Texans Thank MEDEX
Dear Editor:
We are “winter Texans” and recently experienced a medical emergency. Nelson Stubbs, Midwest Area vice president and a friend of ours, gave us the contact number we needed to reach MEDEX.
MEDEX employees were extremely helpful in explaining this benefit and what we needed to provide them to obtain our reimbursement, which arrived in a timely fashion.
We highly recommend the MEDEX emergency medical assistance program to those who are in need. It’s a wonderful benefit of belonging to FMCA.

Arizona Assistance
Dear Editor:
I travel with another widow, and we’ve recently returned from a 30-day journey cross-country and back. We have a 26-foot motorhome and tow a Chevy Tracker. Our journey was filled with great adventures and wonderful people and memories for a lifetime.
During the last week of our journey, on our way from Rocky Mountain National Park to Colorado Springs, my friend tripped and fell and broke her wrist. She was taken to a nearby hospital where her wrist was set and put in a cast, and we headed back home to Phoenix, Arizona. The trip was difficult, as there were high winds and even a tornado near Interstate 25 as we were traveling south. I had some problems with the coach losing power after going over the Raton Pass, but I chalked it up to the difficult climb. The next day, as we traveled from Albuquerque to Phoenix, the coach again lost power on the freeway, and I managed to get it safely to the shoulder. After a few minutes the coach started up again, and we decided to stay at the nearest campground: the Holbrook KOA.
I can’t thank the staff enough for their kindness to us in our situation. We pulled in on Sunday evening, and no mechanics were available until Monday morning. We called Rusty at Scotty’s Garage & 24 Hour Towing in Holbrook. I explained to Rusty all that had happened and the urgency to try to get my friend home to a doctor to have her arm checked. Rusty went out of his way to help us and fix the vehicle and get us on the road in record time. I can only say thanks for the kindness and help extended to us by the Holbrook KOA and Scotty’s Garage in Holbrook, Arizona.

Awning Saved
Dear Editor:
We would like to acknowledge some Good Samaritans. While we were traveling west on Interstate 90 in South Dakota, the motorhome’s main awning began to unfurl. We were driving into a strong northwest wind (20-30 miles per hour). My wife and I tried to pull the awning down so that we could roll it up. The wind was under the awning, and we could not get control of it.
Our Good Samaritans were Ron and Nancy Clapp, F286917. They stopped and over the next hour, we were able to get the awning rolled. Without their assistance, we would have lost the awning and may have caused damage to the coach. We thank them for stopping and assisting.

Indiana Amish Farm Adventure
Dear Editor:
For those of you looking for something to do while in the Nappanee, Shipshewana, and Goshen, Indiana area, we have found a lovely adventure that takes a couple of hours to explore.
After visiting the flea market in Shipshewana, we had a little rest, and then went to Maple Lane Wildlife Farm on our way back to Nappanee.
The farm is in Topeka, Indiana, and owned and operated by a young Amish family. It has an animal park with exotic and domestic animals, plus those not normally seen in North America. The shaded park is neat, clean, and very well-maintained. Cougars, tigers, bears, and llamas are among the wildlife you see while taking a self-guided tour. You may purchase feed for many of them if you wish. There are several spots where you can stop and sit while watching the animals.
The cost is very reasonable “” $6 for adults and $4 for seniors; $3 for children ages 3 to 12; and under age 3, free. There is a shaded picnic area, too.
This is a really nice stop, and the owner will tell you about each animal’s history, plus many interesting facts. The park even has a former Hollywood star in the compound, and he is a beauty.
