Personal preferences … everybody’s got ’em. How about when it comes to your motorhome? Here’s what several FMCA members contributed in response to the question:

What is your motorhome’s best feature (looks, livability, a special component, etc.)?

* * *

We own a 1998 Georgie Boy motorhome and decided last year that we would like to update the interior. So we proceeded to have the seats recovered in marine vinyl. We also took out the carpeting and replaced it with a hardwood floor from the very front of the coach back to the bedroom. What a difference it made! We get so many comments on it, since you don’t normally see a full wood floor from front to back. We even redid the pedestals for the seats. It is a dream to keep clean. We also put a vinyl floor in the bathroom, new carpeting in the bedroom, new sink fixtures, and a new commode. It was fun revamping it ourselves, and now we have a new coach!

It was a dark and stormy night. The three days’ rain drummed relentlessly on the hard fiberglass roof of the coach. Sleep had barely come when a cold nose pressed itself against my cheek. The message was clear: “I’ve got a problem, Dad,” she said. And indeed she did. Our Sheltie, Misty, had been suffering from diarrhea, and the most pressing need now was an immediate trip to the dog run. The area was wet and very nasty. After the trip we were both muddy and soaked to the bone. As I dried Misty, I realized that the middle entrance to our motorhome, landing on vinyl rather than a carpeted front entrance to our living room, was without doubt our favorite feature.

We have a 2003 Winnebago Journey. Of the many features we enjoy, I would have to say the wheelchair access is the best, from the lift to enter to the fully accessible bathroom. Our coach is also fully drivable with the hand controls. These adaptations have given us much freedom to see this great country we live in.

Full-timers have different perspectives than weekend warriors carrying a pack of “navigators.” We prize livability and comfort over the number of beds. Although delighted with our Mandalay quad, with its ample elbowroom, we’ve substituted two credenzas for the J-lounge and day-bed, and added two leather Euro loungers and matching ottoman. One credenza received an electric fireplace, a dehumidifier, a safe, and cupboards. The other received an electric piano-keyboard, a wine-chiller, and more cupboards. A 42-inch Sony HDTV replaced the front 23-incher; another fireplace was installed under the bedroom vanity; and we upgraded the bed with the world’s most luxurious mattress and lovely bamboo sheets. Polished porcelain tile replaced lounge broadloom, and upgraded lighting fixtures replaced basic ceiling fluorescents. Belowdeck is a freezer, an inflatable tandem kayak, golf bags, a barbecue, patio furniture, and more. With our faithful Honda tagging along astern, it all works great for us.

Our current, and fifth, motorhome is an Alpine. It is the best-driving unit we have had, in all kinds of weather. We put 10,000 miles on it in 2008.

Future questions:
1. What’s the best state or province for motorhome travel?
2. What’s the most unusual place or attraction you’ve visited during a motorhome trip?
