As motorhomers know, the southwestern United States is chock-full of beautiful and intriguing sites to visit. We feature one of each this month, thanks to FMCA members who answered the question:

What is your favorite Southwest destination (park, city, tourist attraction, etc.)?

***

Our favorite Southwest destination park is the Gilbert Ray Campground (520-877-6000; www.pima.gov/nrpr/camping/index.htm) at Tucson Mountain Park, in the hills outside of Tucson, Arizona. A peaceful, beautifully maintained park full of Sonoran desert plants such as saguaro, sage, and mesquite bushes, it is the perfect place to relax and appreciate the desert and some of nature’s spectacular offerings. Plus, it is only five minutes from the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, with its spectacular zoo and botanical gardens, and only a 15-minute drive into Tucson, where the carne seca (dried beef in a taco or burrito) is definitely worth a Try!

Have you ever been a member of the U.S. Navy, or known (or been related to) a Navy person? Or just wished you might have joined the Navy when you were a teenager? Then a visit to the USS Midway (first carrier ever named for a sea battle) should be in your future. With acres of uncovered parking right next to the ship, the USS Midway Museum is an unforgettable adventure for the entire family. You can feel like you’re going to sea without leaving port. Explore more than 60 exhibits (including several powered flight trainers), climb through or sit in a collection of 25 restored aircraft, and then visit the gift shop for a meaningful souvenir. The pre-atomic-age carrier saw almost 50 years of service protecting the United States in virtually every sea and ocean on the Earth. It is located in downtown San Diego (619-544-9600; http://www.midway.org/).

Future questions:
1. What motorhome accessory can you just not live without?
2. What’s the best Italian restaurant you’ve discovered in your motorhome travels that you would recommend to other RVers?
