Whether they’re grand events attracting tens of thousands of people, or small gatherings in quaint towns, festivals can make for an enjoyable day. This month we share comments from two FMCA members with a particular fondness for specific events. Describe a festival you’ve enjoyed attending.

We really enjoy the Winter Harbor (Maine) Lobster Festival, held each year on the second weekend in August. We lived in Winter Harbor in the 1970s and attended the festival. We continue to return each year that our schedule permits. It is a low-key festival with a craft show, lobster boat races, a lobster bake, and a small-town parade. Winter Harbor is the home of the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park (based in Bar Harbor) and provides beautiful scenery in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you enjoy piano music, the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, Missouri, is for you. This annual festival runs for five days during the first week of June. This is my favorite festival. In the downtown area, several pianos are set up for performers. Thirty to 40 very talented musicians play in 20-minute cycles throughout the day. Performers from around the world play music from ragtime to classical and everything in between. There are also several paid venues, free dance lessons, and a tea dance. Some performers appear in period costumes. An after-hours session is held nearby, where you can mingle with and listen to these talented pianists. Camping at the local fairgrounds is available, providing full hookups at a reasonable rate, and it is close to all the activities.
