Is it easy being green while traveling? Several readers shared their experiences by answering this month’s question:
Do you recycle when on the road?
***
We are full-timers and definitely recycle. We recycle all paper, including junk mail, magazines, maps, brochures “” everything except receipts and statements. Those are cross-shredded before being recycled. Aluminum cans are easy; many groups and businesses collect them, because they can be sold (but they don’t pay us). “Tin” cans, however, are a different matter. So are the various classes of glass and plastic. Sometimes only certain colors of glass are accepted. Also, we never know what plastic classes will be accepted, so we keep them all. In spite of the difficulty of finding places to leave our recyclables, we hang onto everything. We hoard them all in plastic bags and boxes until we can find a place that will accept them. There are times when the back end of our little Subaru Forester is piled full of stuff waiting to be recycled.

We just spent one year on the road in six provinces in Canada and 15 states in the U.S., including Alaska. I must say that we were very disappointed with the lack of effort from most campground owners to recycle. Sometimes we had to carry our recycling waste for weeks before finding a suitable location to dispose of it. In other locations, where apparently there was a recycling program, we caught owners (we prefer not to mention in which states) who dumped the recycling bins in the waste dumpsters a few minutes before the normal pickup. No doubt the RV community has to do more to save our planet and give the opportunity to our grandchildren to fully enjoy the RV lifestyle and still be able to contemplate the natural beauties and wildlife that we are so lucky to be surrounded by today.

Recyclables get bagged “” aluminum in one; glass, plastic, and metal in another “” and dropped in the first available recycling bins. The rest is bagged and disposed of in available trash bins.

Future questions:
1. What’s your favorite kind of potluck (organized/impromptu, chapter or family gatherings, breakfast/lunch/dinner/happy hour, etc.), and why?
2. If you motorhome with children or grandchildren, what fun activities do you enjoy together?
