Spend time at nearly any rally or campground, and it becomes evident how many RVers travel with their furry friends or other creatures. Judging from the responses to this month’s question, it seems that the majority of pets share the joy of motorhoming with their owners:

Describe your pet’s attitude toward motorhome travel . . . likes it, afraid of it, just another day?

We are owned by three Jack Russells, who absolutely love to go RVing with us. As soon as they see me packing our Winnebago Journey, they all get excited and try to slip out of the house.  When it’s time to leave, we open the door to our porch and the door to the motorhome and tell the girls that it is time to get “on the road.” Flyer and Zoe run out and jump up the motorhome steps, but for some reason, Ping runs back into our house, and I carry her out to join her sisters. We think the noise from the diesel engine and the generator scares her. Once we get moving, they all have their favorite spots. Flyer likes the floor cover over the steps, Ping likes the recliner, and Zoe wraps herself up in a blanket on the sofa.

We have a tiny toy poodle named Pixie. She thinks the motorhome is great, because we can sit in the living room area and throw a ball all the way into the bedroom. She then gets to chase it and bring it back, running as hard as she can. She also loves to go for walks around the campground or just our site — she is very curious. Pixie has never seen a stranger and loves meeting all the new people in the RV parks.

Our golden retriever, Teddy, loves motorhome travel. He enjoys walking around each new location, exploring all the sights and smells. Like us, he is fond of sitting outside in the evenings and watching the neighbors walk by. He basks in the compliments they give him: “What a good dog.” “What a pretty dog.” He loves the extra pets and affection he receives. We are fortunate to have a window behind the copilot seat that goes down to the floor. When Teddy hears the engine start, he lies down in front of the window, content to watch the world go by until we reach a new location, which means more walks, compliments, and affection.

Our dalmatians want to be up front with us; one stands on the engine doghouse and the other lies across my wife-copilot’s lap, looking out the side window. They always want to go somewhere. (Our friends have a young golden retriever who goes by his middle name, “Chuck.” First name: “Up.” But he’s getting used to travel as he matures.)

We purchased our Roadtrek just so our shelties could travel with us! All I have to do is say to Kalle, “Want to go in the Trek?” She immediately runs to the door. When we are traveling, she always stops at the door, looks out to see where she is, and seems very excited to explore her new environment. Kalle is very attached to her camping home. Even when it is sitting in our driveway at home, she must go along if I need to get something out of it, just to make sure no one leaves without her. Dogs are a wonderful way to meet new friends, both two- and four-legged!

We adopted our dog, Buddy, from the local animal shelter three years ago. He loves to ride in our car, but we were not sure how he would be traveling in our motorhome. The first time we took him on a camping trip, we opened the door and he went right in. He looked at the couch, which I had covered with a blanket, and looked back at me. After I said “Okay,” he promptly got up on the couch and made himself at home. He then turned and looked at us as though to say, “Wow, this is going to be great!” That was all it took. From then on, Buddy has enjoyed traveling and meeting other people and their pets. He is a great companion and gives us unconditional love every day.

Future questions:

1. Describe the best breakfast you’ve ever eaten during a motorhome trip.

2. What’s the top activity/place to visit on your motorhome “bucket list”?
