The 24th Annual Western Area Rally, presented by the Western Area Motorhome Association, was held January 11 through 15, 2012, at the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival Fairgrounds in sunny Indio, California. The theme for this year’s rally was “Western’s Pirate Adventure,” which inspired some fabulous floats and costumes for the parade — always a highlight of the rally. Thanks to all of the chapters that participated in the parade and congratulations to the winners.
This was one of the largest Western Area rallies in several years. A total of 1,677 motorhomes were on grounds during the event, along with 75 passport attendees and 2,050 individuals who purchased day passes. Attendees had ample opportunity to shop for RV-related merchandise offered by 209 exhibitors. For those interested in buying a new motorhome or just seeing the latest models available, 110 coaches were on display. This year, the rally featured 99 technical and educational seminars and 15 craft seminars.
In addition, numerous entertainment options kept attendees busy throughout the event. More than 800 people showed up for bingo on Wednesday night to round out the first day of rally activities. On Thursday, the La Quinta Boys & Girls Club Heatwave Jazz & Show Band marched in the parade and performed during evening entertainment. That night we also had a chance to laugh and reminisce during the CCFMCA Review, a variety show presented by members of the California chapter. Entertainment on Friday night featured Kenny & Friends, a Las Vegas-style show paying tribute to some of country music’s biggest stars. On Saturday night, comedian Dick Hardwick had the crowd roaring with laughter, which was followed by terrific New Orleans-style jazz music from the Original Wildcat Jass Band. The Frustrated Maestros provided us with some fabulous entertainment during coffee hour each morning and also brought a festive atmosphere to the ice cream socials on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
The rally was made possible by the 875 volunteers who were honored at the Volunteer Dinner. The Western Motor Home Association has always been blessed with dedicated volunteers and staff working together to make the rallies a success. Our volunteers make us “The Best in the West.”
Next year’s Western Area Rally is scheduled to take place January 9 through 13, 2013, again at the Riverside County Fair. The theme for the rally will be “Western’s Under The Big Top.” So, make plans to join us for another great rally with plenty of fun things to do.
