Recall Corner: August 2012

August 1, 2012

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) has announced NHTSA recall 12V242000, which affects 2005 through 2012 model-year Freightliner Custom Chassis MC and MCL motorhome chassis equipped with Bosch hydraulic disc brakes manufactured from March 18, 2005, through July 19, 2011. The potential number of chassis involved is 2,287.

During long periods of nonuse, the hydraulic brakes on these motorhome chassis may experience diametrical brake caliper piston growth and reduced piston-to-bore clearance, which could lead to brake drag and overheating and may result in reduced brake performance. Under certain driving conditions, reduced brake performance could lead to a crash.

A DTNA authorized service facility will inspect the suspect vehicles to determine whether they contain hydraulic brake calipers and replace them if so. The estimated time of repair had not be determined as of press time.

For more information, contact DTNA at (800) 547-0712. Owner notification was expected to begin in July 2012.

Foretravel Motorcoach has announced NHTSA recall 12V239000, which affects 2007 through 2011 model-year Nimbus and 2007 through 2010 model-year Phenix motorhomes equipped with Se-Gi vented windows and built from August 2006 through June 2010. The potential number of motorhomes involved is 121.

On the affected motorhomes, certain Se-Gi windows include a glass panel that is hinged at the top to open for ventilation. Over time, the glass vent panel may de-bond from the hinge and the glass portion of the vent panel can fall from the vehicle while it is stationary or in motion. If this occurs during travel, it could create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury. The recall involves only the manual opening (movable) vent panels of the side windows. The fixed (nonopening) panel areas are not affected.

Foretravel and Se-Gi have developed a remedy campaign to inspect and obtain parts to repair the window. The inspection is expected to take approximately 30 minutes. If the motorhome has one or more of the defective panels, the service center will confirm the specifications of the window(s) and order and install replacement vent panels supplied by Se-Gi Products Inc. Se-Gi Products has indicated that they will manufacture and ship replacement vent panels to Foretravel within 30 days of being ordered.

For more information, contact Foretravel Motorcoach at (800) 955-6226. Owner notification began in June 2012.
