Summer is rally season, judging from the many events listed in FMCA’s Association Calendar. The calendar includes FMCA’s upcoming “Formula For Fun” Family Reunion, August 27-30, in the Hoosier State. We recently asked for side trip suggestions:
FMCA’s 87th Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana, this August. What are some must-see stops in the area?

About 108 miles south of Indianapolis is the French Lick-West Baden Resort complex. It includes the historic West Baden Hotel, which has been restored to its glory days and has become a must-stop place to visit, stay, or play. Drive 55 miles west of Indianapolis to see the 31 covered bridges of Parke County, built in the 1800s using the area’s abundant virgin timber. The bridges were covered to protect the wooden planks and to keep horses from being spooked when they crossed over running water. About 65 miles south of Indianapolis is Brown County State Park, with more than 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges, and fog-shrouded ravines, plus 20-plus miles of tree-lined roads and many scenic forested vistas. Brown County is known for shopping, dining, and arts and crafts, and offers more than 13 world-class zipline canopy tours. And everyone should visit the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, just minutes from the “Formula For Fun” convention site!

Since the “F” in FMCA is for “family,” the place to visit near Indy is the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (www.childrensmuseum.org), the world’s biggest (and best) such museum. It has been rated one of the top tourist attractions for families by many magazines and Web sites. I know young and old alike will enjoy this very interactive museum.

Plan a visit to Conner Prairie Interactive History Park (www.connerprairie.org), in Fishers, Indiana, less than 20 miles east of the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Adults will enjoy speaking with the blacksmith and the shopkeeper about the current (1836) state of the economy and social issues. Kids of all ages will enjoy throwing a hatchet at the Lenape Indian Camp, or shooting a musket on a Civil War battlefield. There are plenty of hands-on experiences to take you back to a time before computers, cars, and refrigeration. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to take a hot-air balloon ride 350 feet in the air for a fabulous view of Indianapolis.

Future questions:
1. What was the main reason you decided to buy your first motorhome?
2. If you use your motorhome to travel to sporting events, where do you go and what activities do you enjoy once you get there?
