To many, pizza is the slice of life. Nowadays pizza chains everywhere offer their own tasty take on this favorite dish. But the out-of-the-way eateries are priceless – and very accessible to those who roam. Hence, this month’s discussion topic:
Describe a memorable pizza place you’ve discovered during your motorhome travels.

It was our first visit to Massachusetts and we were enjoying every minute. We rambled down Route 3A to Plymouth, toured that historic town, then contacted a friend — a former resident — who recommended pizza at Monte Christos, a great local place for food, music, and fun south of town. “Florida visitors?” the waitress asked. “Your friend called and told us you were coming. Welcome.” We had a ball. The locals were extremely friendly; the owner was like an old acquaintance. We felt as though we had known everybody for years. We enjoyed the talented locals singing karaoke, joked with everyone, and stayed too late. It was a fun night with excellent food that will long be remembered.

I was traveling with a noted tour company down the West Coast. By the time I reached Morro Bay, California, my Roadtrek was very dirty. I looked for a self-spray vehicle wash and changed into my grungiest cut-off sweatshirt and pants. After cleaning the Roadtrek, I was worn out and decided I wanted pizza. I did not even change my clothes. I started slowly down the main street toward Morro Rock and spied a pizza sign in a window. I pulled over, went inside, and ordered my pizza to go. A White Sox game was on TV. Old, signed surfboards were everywhere: tied to the walls, hanging from the ceiling, stacked between pinball machines. Black-and-white signed photos in simple frames showed old surfers with their wooden boards. Wow, a museum! A young man ran in, hair wet, shouting, “You could get killed out there today. Those tourists cannot surf at all, and they are dangerous.” The patrons began to discuss the pros and cons of surfing and how to avoid the tourists. Oops — pizza ready, baseball game over, time to leave. And the pizza? Delicious!

We used to spend our Christmas camping with two other couples and stayed at John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida. One afternoon while heading out on U.S. 1, we passed a pizza place and decided to stop. What a big mistake. We ended up eating there many times. We can’t remember the name of the place, but it was past the entrance to the state park, heading south, on the right side of U.S. 1. The food was fantastic, and they had garlic knots to die for. My thighs can attest to it. If anyone is heading south on U.S. 1 in Key Largo, look for a pizza place on the right, and if you stop once, you’ll stop again!
