Whether stretching out the kinks after a long day of driving, or practicing a daily workout routine, it’s great to get moving. These exercise suggestions can be tried wherever you roam.
How do you work at staying fit during motorhome trips?
When my wife and I travel, especially on U.S. interstates, we take time to stop and walk around the perimeter of a rest stop every two hours. That gives our bodies a chance to recuperate from fanny fatigue. In the afternoon you run the risk of a sugar low, so walking gets blood circulating to the brain. When you arrive at your destination, stretching exercises, running in place, riding a bicycle, and the gold standard — walking — can be part of your workout routine. The trick is not to let lack of equipment get in the way. Exercise with a dining table chair, or try push-ups and sit-ups on the floor of your coach. I use a gallon of water as a weight for working out (water in a gallon jug weighs approximately 8 pounds). You can use the entry step on your coach or a jump rope to get a great aerobic workout, and use small towels for arm exercises.

Our crusade is dog rescue, and our workout is power walks. They make a perfect pair. Gypsy Dog makes sure we get up early and walk miles each day, rain or shine. Off-leash parks and beaches provide even more exercise as we play ball, fetch, and disc toss.
In addition, most camping resorts now have at least some workout facilities. Some also offer yoga, tai chi, and other classes. Most have swimming pools, and it’s easy to do water aerobics on your own. Call ahead to see what’s available on-site or nearby. Other choices? Join a national fitness chain such as Anytime Fitness or Gold’s Gym. (Make sure the chain allows its members to use its facilities anywhere, free or at a discount.) Some travelers like a jump rope routine or resistance bands; both carry in little space. An online search for “fitness in small spaces” finds such sites as Prevention.com and YouTube. DVDs include “Amazing Stress Solutions for Small Spaces” and a whole series titled “Sit and Be Fit.”
