Spartan Motors Inc. has announced a pair of NHTSA recalls.
The first is NHTSA recall 13V531000, which involves model-year 2013 and 2014 K2, K3, and MM motorhome chassis built from September 27, 2012, through June 10, 2013. The potential number of motorhome chassis involved is 174.
On the affected chassis, the castle nuts for the steering linkage ball joint fasteners, which mount to the bell cranks, may be loose. If a castle nut were to come completely loose, the steerage linkage might separate from the bell cranks without warning. This could cause a loss of steering, which could result in a vehicle crash.
An authorized Spartan Chassis service center will inspect the castle nuts and tighten them as necessary. The inspection and repair may take up to 4 hours. However, because of service scheduling times, the service department may need the vehicle for a longer period of time. Owner notification began in December 2013.
The second is NHTSA recall 14V02000, which involves model-year 2010 through 2014 MM motorhome chassis built from December 11, 2009, through January 30, 2013, and equipped with a sway bar and model 1253 front suspension. The potential number of chassis involved is 452.
On the affected chassis, the rebound travel of the 1253 model front suspension was increased from previous designs. The increase in travel results in a binding condition of the sway bar end link that may lead to the sway bar end links breaking. Broken sway bar end links may result in poor vehicle handling, which could lead to a vehicle crash.
An authorized Spartan Chassis service center will replace the old sway bar end link with new links and improved mounting. The repair is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours. However, because of service scheduling times, the service department may need the vehicle for a longer period of time. Owner notification was expected to begin in March 2014.

Tiffin Motorhomes Inc. has announced NHTSA recall 13V638000, which involves model-year 2013 and 2014 Allegro RED 33AA motorhomes equipped with electric fireplaces that have a heat vent at the bottom of the fireplace. The potential number of motorhomes involved is 222.
On the affected motorhomes, a piece of exposed wood inside the fireplace may be ignited when the fireplace is being used. If the exposed wood ignites, the fire could spread throughout the rest of the motorhome.
A Tiffin dealer will install a heat shield over the exposed piece of wood. The repair is expected to take approximately 60 minutes. However, because of service scheduling times, the service department may need the vehicle for a longer period of time.
