  • Family and Friends: Corbett Pool Built Houses, Formed Friendships

Corbett Pool, L140306, enjoyed building things. As a volunteer with FMCA Chapter: Habitat for Humanity®, the retired Marine Corps colonel helped construct more than 30 houses around the country, and he served as team leader on most of those projects. But just as important was his gift for building relationships.

  • The Value Of Inverters

An inverter transforms 12-volt-DC battery power into 120-volt-AC power, which means that coach owners can operate 120-volt electrical equipment when driving or dry camping, without using a generator.

  • Motorhome Chassis: The Age Gap

Motorhome owners often are shocked to discover that their chassis is a model year older than the rest of the coach. In some cases, the chassis is two model years older. Which begs the question: Why?

  • Albuquerque Rising

Yoda and Darth Vader loomed in front of me like wisps of air floating through a dream. I came back to reality when I heard my wife make a comment about the balloons. My attention then focused on the majesty, awe, beauty, grace, and wonderment of attending the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

  • Living Off The Land

Enjoying fresh, local produce is one of the pleasures of motorhoming. Farmers' markets and fruit and vegetable stands pepper the highways during the growing season. Buying from farmers and growers during our travels gives us the freshest food and connects us to people of the land in a way that supermarket purchases cannot.

  • Cliffs And Mysteries

The Four Corners region of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado is a landscape often seared and dried by the sun. Today it’s hard to imagine the area filled with families growing crops of corn, squash, and beans; chatting and weaving baskets; and conducting a lively trade with other communities stretching across what is now the southwestern United States.

  • President’s Message: Second Chances

Those of you who have been reading my articles may remember that I have reported on a few of my own mistakes while pursuing this lifestyle we all enjoy. Even though some of them have given us a few laughs, I am happy to report that I am making progress to avoid repeating them when given a second chance.

    Drone Etiquette
    Dear Editor:
You had a nice article from Mark Quasius regarding how to use cameras on personal drones (May 2015, “Eyes In The Sky,” page 70). However, Mark failed to list one very important operating guide, which has to do with respecting your neighbors.

    Towing A Chevy Silverado 1500
I now plan to tow my 2014 Chevrolet Silverado four wheels down. I’ve had a Blue Ox base plate installed on the Silverado along with an ICX transmitter for the Even Brake. All of the wiring for the system has been installed in the truck. Family Motor Coaching’s 2014 towing guide says that the negative battery cable must be removed from the battery before the 2014 Silverado 1500 can be towed.

    Why No Heat?
    Dear RV Doctor:
I have a 40-foot 2014 Tiffin Phaeton with two Suburban furnaces. When the outside air temperature falls below 40 degrees, I turn on the furnaces. Initially, both run fine, cycling on and off to maintain the set point. But at about 5:00 a.m., they both quit, and there is no heat or fan.

    Curtains For Kitty
When our friends bought a new motorhome, they gave us the windshield shade from their old coach. It was a wonderful addition until we started taking our cat with us. With the shade completely down, the cat could not enjoy looking outside at night; keeping the shade partially up allowed bright lights to shine in.

  • Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum

Though it’s called the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," Minnesota actually has nearly 12,000 of them. It’s no wonder, then, that more than 800,000 watercraft are registered in the state and 36 percent of Minnesota households own a boat.

  • Open Mike: Moving On After Thieves Move In

Seven minutes is all it took for our RV to be burglarized, and for us to lose $12,000 worth of equipment — just about everything of value inside the motorhome except the dog. Yes, just seven minutes. That was enough time for the bad guys to come into our space and to take our stuff. We know it was only seven minutes, because our dash cam was recording most of it.
