Rear View: October 2015

October 1, 2015

Winter, spring, summer, fall . . . love just one, or love them all. Several FMCA members share their preferences by joining this month’s discussion:

What is your favorite season for motorhoming? Please explain why.

Camping season for our family is anytime I can get the family together for a trip. With different children of different ages in different schools, vacations and time off do not always coincide. When buying a new coach, I always insist on a full-season model. We have been camping in all seasons, and each one has its own rewards and excitement. Because some in our family have seasonal jobs, we do not camp on the big holidays, but usually before or after them. Camping during the off-season means that finding a campground can be a challenge in the Northeast, but we do find some open and just have to travel a little farther. We go motorhoming as much as we can, and every year we vow to do more than last year.

Halloween in October is my favorite time of year. The group we travel with is so creative. We stay in a campground that celebrates this holiday with costume parades, pumpkin carving, and a pumpkin-throwing contest. Several of our friends go all out with RV decorations, fog machines, and a wild light display. Our desserts are unusual and decorated with tombstones, etc. Of course, don’t forget the witch’s punch. We love to tour the campground to see the many fantastic displays. We enjoy the families who go from site to site for candy. Happy Halloween, FMCA friends!

During our 44 years of RVing, we have traveled through all the seasons, and all kinds of weather. However, fall is our favorite time of year to be on the road. The temperatures are usually cooperative, and the roads don’t seem to be as busy as other times of the year. If you are in the right area, you get to see magnificent changes in the colors of the leaves on the trees — nature at work. Fall is such a welcoming transition, which is why we enjoy it so much.

Future questions:

1. Describe a stop you’ve made for fresh, local produce that you enjoyed during a motorhome trip.

2. Gas or diesel: Which type of motorhome do you prefer, and why?
