Recall Corner: May 2017

May 1, 2017

First, the following recall notices are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To search for recalls, investigations, and complaints by vehicle year, make, and model, visit www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues. NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline is (888) 327-4236.

Daimler Vans USA

Recall 17V-025 involves certain model-year 2012 Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The recall also involves certain model-year 2009 Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Also, the vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. If the front air bags deploy during a crash, the inflators may rupture as a result of propellant degradation caused by long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. A rupture may cause metal fragments to pass through the air bag and into the vehicle interior. Daimler Vans initially notified owners in February 2017. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag module. Contact Daimler Vans (Mercedes-Benz) at (877) 762-8267.

Next, Recall 17V-093 involves certain model-year 2013-2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans. The vehicles were manufactured without a reinforcement plate and protective bracket on the air bag control unit. The air bag control unit may not remain functional after an initial impact, possibly preventing additional air bags from deploying in response to a secondary impact. Daimler Vans expected to begin notifying owners in March 2017. Dealers will install a reinforcement plate and protective bracket around the air bag control unit. Contact Daimler Vans (Mercedes-Benz) at (877) 762-8267.

Next, Recall 17V-149 involves certain model-year 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The bracket for the center support bearing of the driveshaft may not have been properly welded; in the event of a crash, the bracket may detach and the driveshaft may damage the fuel system, increasing the risk of a fire. Daimler Vans expected to begin notifying owners in April 2017. Dealers will install additional rivets to secure the bracket. Contact Daimler Vans (Mercedes-Benz) at (877) 762-8267.

Foretravel Inc.

Recall 17V-098 involves certain model-year 2015-2017 Realm motorhomes. The brake pedal movement may be restricted by the pedal box, possibly preventing full brake application. Foretravel will notify owners, and dealers will reposition or modify the pedal box to allow proper brake pedal travel. The recall was expected to begin March 31, 2017. Contact Foretravel at (800) 955-6226.

REV Recreation Group

Recall 17V-072 involves certain model-year 2017 Fleetwood Storm and Holiday Rambler Vacationer XE motorhomes and 2016-2017 Holiday Rambler Vacationer motorhomes. The spring shackle bolt may contact the fuel filler components or the fuel vent tubing, causing a hole, potentially resulting in a fuel leak and increasing the risk of a fire. REV will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel filler tube and fuel vent components and reroute them or install additional components to shield them from contacting the spring shackle bolt. The recall was expected to begin April 4, 2017. Contact REV at (800) 509-3417.

Next, Recall 17V-139 involves certain American Coach model-year 2015-2016 American Heritage and American Tradition; 2015-2017 American Revolution and American Eagle; 2016 American Allegiance; 2016-2017 American Dream; and 2017 Holiday Rambler Diplomat and Scepter motorhomes. The support for the interior steps may have been inadequately secured, possibly resulting in the solid-surface step tread being unstable. REV will notify owners, and dealers will install screws to properly secure the support for the interior steps. The recall was expected to begin April 21, 2017. Contact REV at (800) 509-3417.

Also, Recall 17V-140 involves certain model-year 2015 Fleetwood Bounder Classic; 2015-2016 Fleetwood Terra; 2016-2017 Fleetwood Storm, Holiday Rambler Admiral XE, and Fleetwood Flair; and 2017 Holiday Rambler Vacationer XE motorhomes. The vehicles are equipped with an Onan 5.5-kilowatt generator; its external fuel pump and in-line fuel filter may be improperly secured to the chassis, posing the risk of a fuel leak and fire. REV will notify owners, and dealers will secure the fuel pump and in-line fuel filter, as necessary. The recall was expected to begin April 28, 2017. Contact REV at (800) 509-3417.

Thor Motor Coach

Recall 17V-096 involves certain model-year 2014-2015 Thor Motor Coach Tuscany, Tuscany XTE, and Palazzo motorhomes. The windshield wiper systems may have been improperly installed or secured, causing the wipers to fail. Thor Motor Coach will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the wiper nuts to the proper specifications, as needed. The recall was expected to begin April 13, 2017. Contact Thor Motor Coach at (877) 500-1020.

Tiffin Motorhomes Inc.

Recall 17V-113 is an expansion of recall 16V-692 and involves certain model-year 2017 Allegro Open Road motorhomes. A sticker on the tow hitch may list an incorrect weight capacity for the hitch (10,000 pounds, with a maximum tongue weight of 1,000 pounds). The correct towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, with a maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds. Tiffin will notify owners and will supply a corrected weight capacity sticker. A notification schedule has not been set as of press time. Contact Tiffin at (256) 356-8661.

Also, Recall 17V-121 is an expansion of recall 15V-612 and involves certain model-year 2012 Phaeton motorhomes built on PowerGlide chassis with floor plans QBH, QKH, and QTH. An exhaust pipe is mounted too close to the underside of the floor, which may result in insulation melting and an increased risk of fire. Tiffin will notify owners, and dealers will reconfigure the exhaust to provide extra clearance. A notification schedule had not been set as of press time. Contact Tiffin at (256) 356-8661.

Winnebago Industries Inc.

Recall 17V-108 involves certain model-year 2016-2017 Travato motorhomes. The propane hose may contact the emergency brake cable, potentially damaging it and causing a propane leak.

Also, Winnebago will notify owners, and dealers will reposition and secure the propane hose to avoid contact with the brake cable. A notification schedule had not been set as of press time. Contact Winnebago at (800) 537-1885.
