Whether the work involves planting seed potatoes, helping judge a food competition, or other pursuits, RVers can get involved in Cooperative Extension activities around the United States.

The Extension Story

I was interested in the article “Education, Enrichment Through ‘Extension’” by Phillip Meeks in the March 2019 issue (page 48). Having worked for the local cooperative extension service as a 4-H youth professional for 33 years, as well as a 4-H volunteer, I appreciated the author’s explanation of Extension.

As he noted, Norman Rockwell’s painting of a cow next to a young girl holding a record book is only one image of 4-H youth development. Especially in a rural state such as Iowa, it is true that livestock are important to many 4-H members. But Extension is so much more, as explained by the author. Extension is a broad program with access to research and programs from land-grant universities in every state.

I have to admit that I had not thought of inviting RVers to check out Extension programs as they travel. It certainly would be an educational and enjoyable experience.

Thank you for an article about cooperative extension, its many programs, and the best youth development program in America.

How Do You Stay Calm?

Thank you for your magazine! A question I would like discussed by readers involves directions. When my husband and I are traveling, particularly in a city, and we miss a turn; or, when we can’t locate where we are (in spite of or sometimes because of GPS); or, if we drive under low-hanging limbs — you get the picture — things tend to get heated. I’m wondering how others keep their temperaments cool during these episodes. Keys being thrown, I’m pretty sure, isn’t the answer.

After over three decades of motorcycling and attending numerous rallies, we say FMCA is tops! The Perry, Georgia, International Convention and RV Expo in March 2019 was our third FMCA convention and the best of times with extremely friendly people. My wife, Cindy, and I really enjoy the activities and seminars.

This photo was taken on the way to FMCA’s International Convention in Gillette, Wyoming, in 2018. We made a stop at the Badlands while traveling in our Dynamax DX3 Super C motorhome.

Please keep up the great work.

FMCAssist Appreciation

In January 2019, my wife, Carol, and I were snowbirding in southeast Arizona. On our fourth week out, while napping in our motorhome, Carol passed away. It was a total shock to me. I made arrangements to have her brought back home to Oregon for internment in a national cemetery.

Only then did I remember one of the many benefits of membership in FMCA, the FMCAssist medical emergency and travel assistance program. Part of that plan includes return of remains if a covered member passes away while traveling. With only one phone call to Seven Corners [administrator of the program], I was able to get the process of filing a claim completed. I am so thankful for the professional way Seven Corners took care of the details. It lowered my stress in dealing with the loss of my wife of 58 years.

Being a member of FMCA is truly a blessing, and FMCAssist is an outstanding benefit for RVers. Many thanks to all who helped me down this difficult path.
