Family Matters: George Schremp III: A Rally Master With An Easy Smile

Family Matters: George Schremp III: A Rally Master With An Easy Smile
After joining FMCA in the 1980s, George and Maxine Schremp hosted more than 125 rallies.

Good things come to those who wait, and little did George and Maxine Schremp, F46727, realize the good that would come from all the time they spent waiting for their old motorhome to be repaired.

“We started our RV adventure back in 1982,” Maxine said. “George and I decided we wanted a Class A motorhome and found a used one in our area. After spending most of our vacations with me sitting under the trees with the dogs in the campground and George waiting in the local shop with mechanical problems, we decided to trade it in.”

The Winnebago dealer they purchased their new motorhome from included an FMCA membership as part of the transaction.

“That was the beginning of an entirely new world for us,” Maxine said. “We quickly joined our first chapter — the Capitol chapter — and became active members.”

In the years following, they became members of more than 14 other FMCA chapters and spent most of their vacations at FMCA conventions and rallies. They were active volunteers, helping at the information desk, as golf cart drivers, as seminar monitors, and with security. George particularly loved working on the parking crew and became a captain.

“We quickly learned that if we volunteered, we met other members who quickly became good friends, making each convention more enjoyable,” Maxine said.

George also got involved in FMCA leadership, being voted Capitol chapter president for two terms and senior vice president of the International Area for two terms. He was then elected as national vice president, International Area, and served in that role from 2018 to 2020. He also served on the Membership/Member Services Committee for two years, as well as the Risk Management Committee, the Convention Committee, and the Audit Committee.

“It was very unfortunate that the COVID virus came into our lives, and the INTO [International Area] rallies had to be cancelled,” Maxine said. “All in all, George and I hosted more than 125 rallies.”

George passed away on June 19, 2021, at age 72.

“Being from Virginia, George Schremp was a true patriot in every sense of the word,” said Gaye Young, FMCA national vice president, Eastern Area. “Not only did he serve his country, but he also served FMCA in many capacities. The many chapters he and Maxine belonged to, they supported wholeheartedly.” He also was in charge of FMCA’s membership booth at the annual Florida RV SuperShow, she noted.  “As a friend to all, he will be greatly missed,” Gaye said.

“George was respected and admired by so many people,” Maxine said. “I have been told by many that he was one of the most even-tempered individuals they had ever met, and he always made them smile.”
