Family Matters: “Mac The Fire Guy” Imparted Valuable Safety Knowledge
George "Mac" McCoy,

November 2023

It’s impossible to know how many lives George “Mac” McCoy, F374422, saved during his 30-plus years as a firefighter or the number of RVers who benefitted from his advice as a fire safety expert. “Mac The Fire Guy” presented numerous seminars at FMCA international conventions and other RV rallies. FMCA recently learned of his passing.

Veteran firefighter Mac McCoy shared his extensive fire safety knowledge with others.

In addition to his firefighting career, Mac served as a paramedic, a deputy sheriff, and a fire service training coordinator for the state of Oregon. Over the years, he taught fire and life safety courses to thousands of civilians, as well as members of the military, firefighters, and law enforcement officers in the United States and beyond.

During Mac’s FMCA convention seminars, he discussed the various causes and types of fires, the proper use of fire extinguishers, and fire prevention practices. He went beyond the traditional classroom setting and moved outdoors to demonstrate to attendees how to extinguish a live fire. Using a motorhome parked on-site, he also showed them how to safely escape through an RV exit window in the event of a fire and encouraged them to practice on the coach.

At FMCA conventions, Mac McCoy discussed the various types of fires and proper fire extinguisher use and also gave live demonstrations.

Mac was both a family and commercial member of FMCA. He offered extinguishers and related equipment at the association’s conventions — along with more fire safety advice from his exhibit booth.
