When you think of Tiffin Motorhomes, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the company’s popular line of Type A motorhomes. After all, the family-operated business has been producing them for 50 years now in Alabama. In recent years, Tiffin has branched out into the Type C market segment as well, beginning with the Wayfarer model built on a Mercedes-Benz chassis. Tiffin’s latest Type C model is the Midas, a compact coach built on the Ford Transit van chassis. The Midas 24MT, a single-slideout floor plan, seats four and sleeps two.
CHASSIS
The Midas is built on the Ford Transit 350 HD cutaway chassis. Power is supplied by Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 gas-powered engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. A Ford SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission enables the engine to operate in its best rpm range for maximum performance and economy. This is an all-wheel-drive chassis that delivers power to both the front and rear axles for optimal traction. The chassis’ 178-inch wheelbase is fitted with an upgraded SumoSprings ride-assist system. LT205/75R 16C tires are mounted on aluminum wheels.
The Midas has an 11,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and a 13,000-pound gross combination weight rating (GCWR). Its trailer hitch is rated at 2,000 pounds. Just shy of 25 feet long, the coach fits into small places and could be used instead of a towed vehicle for getting around town. The net occupant and cargo carrying capacity (OCCC) is 1,200 pounds.
The Murphy bed shown raised against the wall and converted to a sofa.
This motorhome is equipped with an entire suite of driver safety features. In addition to a tire pressure monitoring system, it comes with Ford’s SOS post-crash alert system, which activates the emergency flashers and sounds the horn if an air bag deployment occurs. The Midas also features four-wheel ABS brakes, electric power-assisted steering, forward collision warning, post-collision automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, as well as a lane-keeping system. Driver conveniences such as rain-sensor windshield wipers and automatic headlight dimming are also included.
EXTERIOR
The Midas features vacuum-laminated sidewalls coupled to a seamless one-piece, gel-coated, fiberglass-molded roof cap and to the front and rear caps, which are similarly constructed. The featured coach was finished in the Midnight full-body paint scheme, one of four available choices. A protective vinyl shield is applied to the front cap and to other strategic locations near the front of the motorhome. A Girard power awning with integrated LED lighting is mounted on the patio side of the vehicle. Frameless awning-style tinted windows are used throughout the coach body. A large storage trunk at the back end of the vehicle can be accessed from the rear or from either side.
INTERIOR
This coach was outfitted in Mink interior décor, one of two available choices, and Sandstone cabinetry, one of three choices. Luxury vinyl tile is used throughout the motorhome, and furniture pieces are covered in one of two vinyl upholstery designs. LED lighting is employed for all interior illumination, and privacy roller shades are tucked into fabric-covered valances.
The cockpit features comfortable, fully adjustable black leather seats. A large screen on the dash handles all the entertainment features as well as navigation and serves as a display for the color rearview camera. Radio features include Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, and Apple CarPlay or Android Audio integration with a smartphone. Power heated mirrors, door locks, and windows are all standard.
The area above the cockpit is too small for sleeping, but it does incorporate some storage space.
The front of the living area features a street-side sofa that makes into a 60-inch-by-74-inch queen-size Murphy bed. A removable pedestal table on each side of the sofa can be deployed for dining. Directly opposite the sofa/bed is a cabinet with a 43-inch smart TV on a power lift.
The galley counter is covered with solid-surface material. It holds a flush-mounted single-burner induction cooktop and a round stainless-steel sink basin with an integral sprayer faucet and solid-surface sink covers. Under-counter and overhead cabinets provide storage space. On the opposite wall is an 8-cubic-foot 12-volt refrigerator; a 7-cubic-foot propane-electric fridge is an available option. Directly above the fridge is a convection-microwave oven. A pull-out pantry is located between the refrigerator and the large storage cabinet just aft of the pantry.
The rear of the coach holds the bathroom, which contains a 34-inch-by-34-inch corner shower stall equipped with a rounded sliding glass door, a skylight, and an Aqua View Showermiser system; the latter recirculates the water until it is warm enough for use. A ceiling-mounted vent fan provides airflow. The solid-surface vanity top holds a porcelain under-mount sink beneath a large mirror. A raised-pedestal foot-flush toilet and a large wardrobe cabinet complete the bath area.
UTILITIES
A 20,000-Btu ducted furnace supplies heat to the coach interior, while a 13,500-Btu air conditioner with a heat pump provides cooling on warm days. Hot water for the shower and sinks is furnished by a Truma AquaGo on-demand water heater. The fresh-water tank holds 38 gallons; the gray tank holds 23 gallons; and the black tank holds 22 gallons. The tanks are heated to prevent freezing in cold weather. A 30-amp detachable shore power cord brings electricity from the campground pedestal to the Surge Guard automatic transfer switch, which also brings in power from the Cummins Onan 4,000-watt gas generator when required.
A pair of 12-volt deep-cycle batteries provides power for the 12-volt accessories as well as for the 2,000-watt inverter that supplies 120-volt-AC power to the entertainment system and various electrical outlets. A roof-mounted 200-watt solar panel produces a bit of free power to assist in charging the batteries. The coach is prepped for cable and satellite TV. A 12.2-gallon propane tank fuels the furnace and water heater. A touch-screen panel controls the Spyder systems multiplex lighting system.
FINAL IMPRESSIONS
Tiffin is known for motorhomes whose floor plans offer comfortable living space, optimal storage space and organization, and attractive décor. In my view, the Midas 24MT fires on all cylinders in that regard, packing a lot of everything into a compact area. The roomy rear bath with wardrobe and the sofa that converts to a queen bed make the coach quite livable for its size.
