It’s no secret that folks like to talk about the weather. Motorhomers can do more than that: They can enjoy the climate where they are, or relocate temporarily. Below, two FMCA members share their thoughts in response to this month’s discussion question:

Are you a snowbird, or do you like RVing in colder climates? Describe your preference.

We continue to use our motorhome all season long as a base camp for winter activities. For example, our best spot to sled is at the rest area of the highway, so we park the RV there and sled down the hills. When we get cold or need to rest, a warm motorhome with hot chocolate makes a great place to retreat. We usually have others join our family. Some campers have told us what a great idea this is. We also enjoy ice skating on a pond that has a large parking lot, so again, we bring the motorhome there and use it to escape from the cold.

Our coach may stay idle during the week, but it’s always on the move for the weekend. We use it to drive to different shopping malls, which becomes an adventure as well. I always have someone say, “Why did I not think of that?” Our motorhome is warm and inviting during the winter.

Rather than “snowbirds,” we call ourselves “summer birds.” We like to go north, away from the humidity and hot summer days of central Florida. Last year, in mid-July, we closed the house, shut off the utilities, and signed up for the seasonal discount program offered by the cable company. The money we saved was used for gasoline expenses. Then, “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, off to the Northeast we go!” We traveled through 13 states in three months, often overnighting at Walmarts to stay within our limited budget. We loved making new friends, visiting small towns, and seeing the wonderful land God has created for our enjoyment!

Future questions:

1. How do you preserve trip memories?

2. Describe a clever and/or useful organizational trick you’ve used in your motorhome.
