The newest version of a luxury fifth-wheel long on residential amenities and technical enhancements.

CrossRoads RV has perfected the luxury RV lifestyle with its Redwood line of fifth-wheel travel trailers. The 4150RD, new for 2022, joins eight other Redwood floor plans, which begin at 36 feet 8 inches long. The 4150RD is the largest and most elaborate one yet. It measures just shy of 45 feet long and has an exterior width of 96 inches. The exterior height, from the ground to the top of the roof line, is consistent from front to rear: 13 feet 6 inches.
The 4150RD is a center-galley floor plan, featuring a front bedroom and a rear living area. It comes with five slideouts. When all are extended, the interior living area is approximately 462 square feet. That creates substantial room in which to relax and move about, and it also enables placement of furniture, appliances, and other appointments where they are most functional. The height of the unit has enabled Redwood designers to include taller, floor-to-ceiling cabinets and wardrobes, along with plentiful overhead wall-mounted cabinets — significantly more storage capacity than typically found in fifth-wheel models. In addition, taller RVers should feel at home in the Redwood; the height in the front landing, location of the master bedroom, residential bath, and walk-in wardrobe, is 6 feet 6 inches.
Three optional full-body exterior paint packages are offered; white gel-coat fiberglass with graphics comes standard. Customers also can choose from three interior décor groups and two cabinet colors. An optional awning package is available.
In contrast to RVs used for frequent weekend trips, the Redwood is designed to accommodate full-timers and others who may prefer to remain parked in one place for longer periods. It still can be taken on the open road, of course. However, with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 18,870 pounds, the 4150RD requires a one-ton truck to safely tow it from destination to destination. Also, because of its overall exterior height, clearance considerations need to be closely monitored while traveling.
Construction
Redwood fifth-wheels are built on CrossRoads’ own F.I.T. 2.0 chassis. Dual 8,000-pound Dexter axles, a MORryde 4100 suspension system, and a MORryde pin box are hosted by a structural frame that consists of Falcon 12-inch/10-inch I-beam members. This custom foundation also incorporates 17.5-inch 16-ply tires and self-adjusting drum brakes (larger disc brakes are offered as an option). Hydraulic slideout systems and a 3,000-pound hitch receiver are standard.
From the outside in, the skin is gelcoat fiberglass backed by dual layers of lauan board. Residential-style insulation packs the pockets created by the welded aluminum frame members, and the interior walls include sanded block foam insulation. The cargo and holding tank bays are heated and insulated with corrugated foam.
The walk-on roof is a single-piece structure with cross members 16 inches on center and insulated with fiberglass batten and additional layers of Astrofoil. Dual-pane frameless windows are used throughout.
Systems
The Redwood is a four-season unit engineered for use in all climates. Each RV undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that its interior is protected from extreme exterior temperatures. Each unit is evaluated when exposed to a temperature of zero degrees Fahrenheit and also 110 degrees. The goal is to maintain an interior temperature of 72 degrees in both scenarios. Rain bay tests help to ensure against leaks.
In addition to its construction and insulation properties, the Redwood’s heating and air-conditioning systems help to regulate those interior temperatures.
The Redwood has three sources of heating. First is the 35,000-Btu propane-fueled forced-air furnace, which evenly distributes heat from floor ducts throughout the length of the unit. The 4150RD comes standard with dual 30-gallon propane tanks; twin 40-gallon tanks are available as an option. The bedroom A/C contains a heat pump. In the rear living area, a 5,300-Btu electric fireplace produces enough heat to warm up to 1,000 square feet, according to the manufacturer.
For cooling, two separately ducted 15,000-Btu air-conditioning delivery systems are designed into the roof: one in the front above the bedroom, bath, and wardrobe area; the second in the rear. An optional third 15,000-Btu rooftop unit can be added to the midsection. The front and rear A/C systems operate independently.
Uncharacteristic of most roof-mounted A/C systems, the Redwood’s systems are designed so that cold air does not travel through circular ceiling ducting; instead, straight ducting is used, and as air reaches the end of the duct, it builds up and is pushed out through the adjustable ceiling vents, similar to residential ductwork.
The 4150RD features 50-amp shore power. An optional 5.5-kw propane-fueled auxiliary generator can be added if desired, along with optional solar panels mounted on the roof and sidewalls, which produce up to 170 watts.
The Redwood’s energy management system makes operation of these various components transparent to the user. For example, if all three roof air conditioners are operating and the electrical demand exceeds design, the EMS automatically reads and cycles off one of the A/C’s compressors until the interior returns to the desired temperature. It then cycles that unit back on and cycles off a different compressor. Once the interior returns to that temperature, the offline compressor is cycled back on. The Redwood can operate on 50-amp shore power, or the auxiliary generator can be used for stand-alone camping.
The 4150RD’s fresh-water tank holds 62 gallons; gray-water and black-water tank sizes are 82 gallons and 44 gallons, respectively.
Other tech items include Key-TV, which integrates antenna, cable, and satellite signals into a single system. For on-the-go internet, the Winegard Air 360+ is a 4G wireless data system that is compatible with most data plans. And as its name suggests, the IN-Command System allows occupants to monitor and adjust various systems via a digital touch screen with friendly icons.
Additional Features
All cabinetry in the Redwood is fabricated from solid cherry wood. The humongous cabinet capacity is the result of customer requests. The same utility and functionality is found in the large pass-through exterior cargo bays, which are nicely finished and heated, including the holding tank service bay. The front pass-through bay is fully finished and includes slat-board storage.
When touring the interior of the 4150RD, it’s easy to see why the word “residential” is used. The furnishings and décor, countertop surfaces, lighting, even the appliances and electrical fixtures, paint a picture of a comfortable contemporary home.
As noted, the front of the fifth-wheel contains the bedroom, bath, and wardrobe/closet area; each stretches across the width of the unit. One enters the bedroom via several steps, where a 72-inch-by-80-inch king-size bed extends from a slideout on the street-side wall. Its gel-foam mattress rests on a bed tilt system. This enables the head of the bed to be set at a comfortable angle for reading, watching TV, etc. The bed also can be raised up when the RV is parked; this moves it back near the slideout and produces a wider aisle to the bath area. Flanking the bed are 120-volt outlets, USB ports, and shelves for CPAP machines. Opposite, a window is surrounded by drawers and wardrobes; a 39-inch TV hangs above it.
In the bath, a long vanity is topped with a solid-surface countertop that incorporates double-basin sinks. Across the room is a porcelain foot-flush toilet. It is positioned near a 48-inch shower equipped with a fold-down teak seat, a residential rain showerhead with sprayer, and a domed skylight.
The sizable walk-in closet, with shelving and wardrobe storage, also provides room for a stackable washer-dryer if customers desire and still leaves a good amount of storage.
Moving aft to the 4150RD’s galley, one encounters a center island that houses an oversized farmhouse sink paired with a large high-rise faucet and sprayer. Solid-surface countertops are used here as well. A large amount of storage fills this area. Cabinets — upper and lower — offer tons of space, including one smaller spot above the residential French door refrigerator. Deep drawers stow pots, pans, and other items. The four-burner propane stove is topped by a 30-inch convection-microwave oven. A high-efficiency dishwasher is available as an option.
The galley expands via a slide-out; a smaller slideout opposite it houses a dinette table and two upholstered chairs. The table expands to accommodate two additional chairs, which are stowed away until needed. A buffet under the window next to the dinette makes a convenient spot for condiments or food items.
A half wall topped with a buffet counter divides the galley from the living area at the rear of the unit. The final two slideouts are positioned here, opposite from each other; both hold a 72-inch tri-fold sofa that can be converted to sleeping space at the same time, with room to spare between them. Theater seating with electric controls rests against the buffet wall. All three seating areas are within view of the 65-inch 4K Smart HDTV on the back wall.
Users can outfit the Redwood 4150RD as desired with many of the options mentioned above. Its base manufacturer’s suggested retail price is approximately $117,000; when fully optioned, the price comes to $170,006.
