Type C motorhomes come in all sizes, lengths, and power trains, and most motorhome manufacturers offer one or more models.

Arguably, some of the very first motorized recreation vehicles were built using a type C motorhome design. The history of the type C literally goes all the way back to the original self-powered “camping” vehicle. In the Roaring ’20s, Henry Ford took one of his company’s truck chassis, had it modified, and mounted a custom-built “house” to its frame rails. Thus, known as a “house car” and similar in appearance to the Pullman sleeper cars of the era, Mr. Ford used the vehicle to take friends “” among them famed inventor Thomas Edison “” fishing and hunting on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
In the 1960s and “˜70s, when the first new type A and bus conversion coaches began making their appearance on dealers’ lots, slide-in camper manufacturers began cutting away the rear walls of pickup trucks and permanently mounting slightly modified versions of their campers directly to the trucks’ frames; these were called chassis mounts. Some of the more daring manufacturers also began cutting off van bodies behind the cab area and adding a “house” to their chassis; however, some of these early van conversions suffered from being overweight and underpowered.
Eventually, the name game was settled and cutaways “” whether on the chassis of a pickup, a van, or a semi-truck “” became known as Class C or type C motorhomes. That is, any cutaway on which the cab portion of the vehicle is retained in front of the house came under the type C banner, regardless of its size or level of luxury.
Today, most type C motorhomes are built on an automotive-manufactured van frame or truck chassis; in several cases, a traditional truck chassis is used. The chassis includes the cab, frame rails, fuel tank, power train, and, if so equipped, dual rear wheels. The cab’s automotive features are retained, although they are often augmented by the motorhome manufacturer. The coach or house portion of the motorhome is built on the chassis.
A feature that used to be fairly common to most type C motorhomes is the sleeping area or additional storage that’s situated above the cab. Nowadays, many manufacturers use this area for storage and an entertainment package. Although type C motorhomes are usually smaller than type A motorhomes, they often provide more sleeping room. This is achieved through a bedroom, a sofa bed, a bench-style dinette that converts into a bed, the cab-over bed, or some combination of all of these.
The construction of the house portion of a type C is pretty much the same as a type A. It can include laminated or vacuum-laminated walls, roof, and interior floor. Aluminum, steel, welded L-channel or tubular metal, and wood are used to create the infrastructure of the floor, walls, and roof. Type Cs can be insulated with residential-style fiberglass or foam-core insulation, and they usually come with a rubber or fiberglass roof. Exterior storage may or may not be pass-through (coach-wide).
What type C models are available today, and which manufacturers are producing them? This article attempts to answer these questions. It includes many of the type Cs currently on the market. Because type Cs within a manufacturer’s stable often are quite similar, we’ve highlighted one model from each manufacturer; however, we do list all of the other models available from that manufacturer.
To make this body of information user-friendly, 16 points of comparison have been listed for each highlighted model. These points include dimensions (exterior length and width, interior height, and wheelbase); weight ratings (gross vehicle weight rating and gross combination weight rating); tank capacities (fuel, fresh water, gray water, black water, and LPG); engines available (horsepower and torque); base suggested retail price; and available options.
Keep in mind that standard and optional features vary from coach to coach “” and from manufacturer to manufacturer “” and what’s considered an option from one manufacturer may be standard for another. These differences will affect the base suggested retail price. And just like buying a new car, the final cost of any motorhome will be affected by options, transportation costs, dealer preparation fees, taxes, licensing fees, and dealer and manufacturer discounts (where applicable).
The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and gross combination weight rating (GCWR) are helpful when determining what size motorhome is best for you. The GVWR is the maximum permissible weight of the fully loaded motorhome, including liquids, passengers, and cargo. The GCWR is the value specified by the motorhome manufacturer as the maximum allowable combined weight of the motorhome and an attached towed vehicle. This and other important weight information is included on all Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) certification labels found on motorhomes built by manufacturers affiliated with RVIA.
Although the RVIA weight certification label will provide helpful and necessary information, it’s recommended that you weigh any motorhome you intend to buy before finalizing your purchase. Make sure that it will have sufficient carrying capacity for your needs and will be safe to operate when fully loaded.
For more information about weights and safety, visit the Motorhome Guide section of www.fmca.com or the Recreation Vehicle Safety & Education Foundation Web site at www.rvsafety.org.
The information provided has been verified by each company and is accurate as of press time. Keep in mind, however, that prices, specifications, and options can change at any time.
