Tech & Travel Tips: August 2017

Tech & Travel Tips: August 2017

Spices Holder
We adhere to a low-sodium diet, so we use many low-salt or no-salt spices and products. At home, the spices are kept on plastic turntables in a cabinet. But traveling with all our spices in our motorhome was a challenge. So, now we remove a turntable from a home cabinet and place the turntable in a plastic cake taker. The spice containers don’t tip over, the spices stay dry, and the plastic lid comes right off when it’s time to cook.

Knife Storage
Because I like to cook, it’s critical that my knives stay sharp and in good shape. Tossing them in a drawer in the motorhome where they can bounce around is not acceptable. The solution: An RV tech cut a 3-inch-by-3-inch square hole out of the counter between the sink and the stovetop. Three slits were cut into a block of wood, and the block was inserted into the square hole and secured. One slit is for my paring knife; one for a butcher knife; and one for a boning knife. Now, knives stay sharp with no nicks. Love it!

Editor’s note: Before cutting a hole in the counter, be sure nothing below it, such as wires or a drawer, will interfere with inserting the knives.

Portable RV Steps
The steps that extend from our Type A motorhome seem unstable to my wife, and she has difficulty using them. So, I found a portable stair system made by Sunrise Products of Heath, Texas. The system is very user-friendly, and after some practice I was able to assemble or disassemble it in 30 minutes or less. My wife is now able to enter and exit the motorhome with no problems.

We bought the 32 Series, a four-step RV porch and deck system. It has a 45-inch-by-45-inch deck with steps that can be oriented to the right, the left, or straight out from the motorhome. Three-step and five-step systems also are available. For information about Sunrise RV Products, visit www.sunrisedecks.com or call (866) 225-8873.
