Tech & Travel Tips: September 2017

Oil Fill Aid
When changing the engine oil in my Type A gas motorhome, it can be a hassle to add oil, because the oil fill port is set back from the front of the coach and is hard to reach. To make the task easier, I use a big funnel and a large-diameter, clear plastic tube, which are available from hardware stores. I attached the tube to the funnel using duct tape. I secure the funnel to a windshield wiper using a ball-end stretch cord.

Editor’s note: Many auto parts stores sell funnels with snap-on extension tubes.

Tire Cover Fastener
In the April 2017 “Tech & Travel Tips,” Tim Slack described using an awning hook to pass a strap around the back of a tire in order to fasten his tire covers. We used that method for years, but getting the hook behind and parallel to the tire still required more crawling and reaching under the motorhome than we could tolerate, particularly for dual rear tires. When we left the strap off, we lost two covers in a windstorm.

Eventually I discovered the answer was a hula hoop. Cut the hoop in half and attach a binder clip for grabbing the strap at one end. The diameter of the half-circle is just the right size to thread the strap under the motorhome, around the tire, and back out the other side, without having to reach under the coach. When traveling, the hoop stows against the back wall of our closet.

Step Tape
After one of us took a fall on our steps, we applied yellow duct tape to the step edges. The tape serves a dual purpose. It provides greater visibility for the steps, and it increases the life of the step rug. If the only goal is longer rug life, any color of tape can be used.
