Recall Corner: February 2017

February 1, 2017

The following recall notices are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To search for recalls, investigations, and complaints by vehicle year, make, and model, visit www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues. NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline is (888) 327-4236.

Daimler Trucks

Recall 16V-809 involves certain model-year 2016-2017 Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) XBR, XCL, XCM, and XCR motorhome chassis manufactured from January 1, 2016, to October 12, 2016, and equipped with Cummins ISL engines. The power steering hose may be routed incorrectly; as a result, the hose may rub against the power stud on the starter motor, possibly causing electrical arcing and a power steering fluid leak. Daimler Trucks will notify owners, and dealers will reroute the power steering hose for proper clearance. The recall was expected to begin December 30, 2016. Contact Daimler Trucks at (800) 547-0712.

Daimler Vans

Recall 16V-833 involves certain model year 2003-2006 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans manufactured from June 30, 2003, to August 31, 2006. Some vans could have been shipped to motorhome manufacturers. The brake warning lamp in the instrument cluster fails to illuminate during the vehicle startup bulb-function check. As a result, the driver has no confirmation that the lamp is working and may not know whether the lamp will illuminate when the brake fluid level is low. A notification schedule had not been set as of press time. Contact Daimler Vans at (877) 762-8267.

Entegra Coach

Recall 16V-827 involves certain model-year 2017 Aspire, Anthem, Cornerstone, and Insignia motorhomes manufactured from April 15, 2016, to October 25, 2016, and built on Spartan Motors chassis. The throttle circuit wires may not have been twisted to cancel out electromagnetic interference; as a result, interference may cause the throttle signal to be higher or lower than intended, causing unintended acceleration or deceleration. Entegra has notified owners, and Spartan service centers will install an overlay harness with twisted wires. The recall began November 29, 2016. Contact Spartan at (800) 543-4277 or Entegra at (800) 517-9137.

Newmar Corporation

Recall 16V-810 involves certain model-year 2017 Dutch Star, Mountain Aire, London Aire, Essex, and King Aire motorhomes manufactured from May 12, 2016, to September 22, 2016, and built on Spartan Motors chassis. The throttle circuit wires may not have been twisted to cancel out electromagnetic interference; as a result, interference may cause the throttle signal to be higher or lower than intended, causing unintended acceleration or deceleration. Newmar will notify owners, and Spartan dealers will install an overlay harness with twisted wires. The recall was expected to begin January 2, 2017. Contact Spartan at (800) 543-4277, or Newmar at (800) 731-8300.

Recall 16V-826 involves certain model-year 2016-2017 Dutch Star and Ventana motorhomes manufactured from January 22, 2016, to November 7, 2016, and built on Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) chassis equipped with Cummins ISL engines. The power steering hose may be routed incorrectly; as a result, the hose may rub against the power stud on the starter motor, possibly causing electrical arcing and a power steering fluid leak. Newmar will notify owners, and FCCC dealers will reroute the power steering hose for proper clearance. Contact Newmar at (800) 731-8300 or FCCC parent company Daimler Trucks at (800) 547-0712.

Thor Motor Coach

Recall 16V-834 involves certain model-year 2014-2016 Tuscany motorhomes, models 40DX, 40KQ, 40RX, 42GX, 42WX, 44MT, 45AT, and 45LT, manufactured from April 11, 2013, to October 12, 2015. Water may leak into the keyless entry module and cause an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire. Thor will notify owners, and dealers will seal the area around the keyless entry module. The recall was expected to begin December 14, 2016. Contact Thor at (877) 500-1020.

Winnebago Industries

Recall 16v-794 involves certain model-year 2017 Winnebago View and Itasca Navion motorhomes manufactured from March 21, 2016, to September 15, 2016. Driver and front passenger seat mounting bolts may be loose, possibly allowing the seats to detach from the mounting pedestals. Winnebago will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the seat mounting bolts to the proper specification. At press time, a notification schedule had not been set. Contact Winnebago at (800) 537-1885.

  • "We were stranded along a narrow road near Bryce Canyon, Utah. The location was not a good place for cellular service, but I was able to contact Roadside Rescue and arrange for a tow after driving our towed vehicle to the town of Bryce. I had to speak with several people at Roadside Rescue, but each person I spoke with was respectful and courteous. The tow was set up and our rig taken to a place that promptly took care of the repair and we were back on the road in 24 hours." Michael & Lynn Noonan (F448134)
