Seven minutes is all it took for our RV to be burglarized, and for us to lose $12,000 worth of equipment — just about everything of value inside the motorhome except the dog. Yes, just seven minutes. That was enough time for the bad guys to come into our space and to take our stuff. We know it was only seven minutes, because our dash cam was recording most of it.

    Curtains For Kitty
When our friends bought a new motorhome, they gave us the windshield shade from their old coach. It was a wonderful addition until we started taking our cat with us. With the shade completely down, the cat could not enjoy looking outside at night; keeping the shade partially up allowed bright lights to shine in.

  • House Calls: August 2015

    Why No Heat?
    Dear RV Doctor:
I have a 40-foot 2014 Tiffin Phaeton with two Suburban furnaces. When the outside air temperature falls below 40 degrees, I turn on the furnaces. Initially, both run fine, cycling on and off to maintain the set point. But at about 5:00 a.m., they both quit, and there is no heat or fan.

    Towing A Chevy Silverado 1500
I now plan to tow my 2014 Chevrolet Silverado four wheels down. I’ve had a Blue Ox base plate installed on the Silverado along with an ICX transmitter for the Even Brake. All of the wiring for the system has been installed in the truck. Family Motor Coaching’s 2014 towing guide says that the negative battery cable must be removed from the battery before the 2014 Silverado 1500 can be towed.

    Drone Etiquette
    Dear Editor:

  • President’s Message: Second Chances

Those of you who have been reading my articles may remember that I have reported on a few of my own mistakes while pursuing this lifestyle we all enjoy. Even though some of them have given us a few laughs, I am happy to report that I am making progress to avoid repeating them when given a second chance.

  • Cliffs And Mysteries

The Four Corners region of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado is a landscape often seared and dried by the sun. Today it’s hard to imagine the area filled with families growing crops of corn, squash, and beans; chatting and weaving baskets; and conducting a lively trade with other communities stretching across what is now the southwestern United States.

  • Living Off The Land

Enjoying fresh, local produce is one of the pleasures of motorhoming. Farmers' markets and fruit and vegetable stands pepper the highways during the growing season. Buying from farmers and growers during our travels gives us the freshest food and connects us to people of the land in a way that supermarket purchases cannot.

  • Albuquerque Rising

Yoda and Darth Vader loomed in front of me like wisps of air floating through a dream. I came back to reality when I heard my wife make a comment about the balloons. My attention then focused on the majesty, awe, beauty, grace, and wonderment of attending the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

  • Motorhome Chassis: The Age Gap

Motorhome owners often are shocked to discover that their chassis is a model year older than the rest of the coach. In some cases, the chassis is two model years older. Which begs the question: Why?

  • The Value Of Inverters

An inverter transforms 12-volt-DC battery power into 120-volt-AC power, which means that coach owners can operate 120-volt electrical equipment when driving or dry camping, without using a generator.

Travels always have a sweeter taste when we learn as we go, sampling local produce, chatting with local fisherfolk and farmers, and helping fledgling food industries. A trip to Cedar Key, a Gulf Coast fishing village in Florida’s forgotten Big Bend country, is always a treat . . .

  • Open Mike: Data Dreaming

Data. It's a new commodity for us, a factor to budget for, a number to know. I'm talking about the data that we access on our smartphones, tablets, and laptops — sent to and received from the Internet via emails, websites, text messages, videos, and music. One question I’m often asked is how much data RVers need as they travel around the country.

In October 2014, my husband and I took a road trip to Newmar’s headquarters in Nappannee, Indiana. This time we came for an inspection and update of our coach.

    Roof Cleaner Recommendation

    Dear RV Doctor:
Twice a year, I clean my RV’s roof with a popular roof cleaner and treatment. Just about every time I wash the RV, I spray on another popular cleaner and wash it off after brushing the roof. Recently an RV technician used silicone spray to lubricate the antenna, and some of the silicone got on the rubber roof. As I wiped it off, it removed a layer of dirt . . .

  • President’s Message: Summer Celebrations

I just realized that this is the 24th column I’ve written since being elected as FMCA national president. As you’ll recall, I’ve had my good times, my bad times, my lost times, and my found times. Through it all I’ve maintained my sense of humor and my love for RVing.

  • Tricky Travel Trivia

Touring the United States by motorhome can add to your knowledge of places and things. Put that knowledge to use by tackling the following trivia questions. The accompanying answers have been verified as much as possible, though a few are debatable.

  • Madison Youth Program

Do you travel with young children or grandchildren? If so, you’ll want to know that planning is well under way for the Youth Program at FMCA's Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase July 29-August 1 in Madison, Wisconsin. We are scheduling outings for children between 6 and 16 years of age.

  • An Entertaining “Escape”

Miles of motorhomes will converge in Madison, Wisconsin, toward the end of July and make that city a capital for fun. The reason? FMCA is holding its 92nd Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase at the city's Alliant Energy Center, July 29-August 1.

  • Take A Flight To Oshkosh

Family Motor Coach Association members who are “flying” to Madison, Wisconsin, to attend the next Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase, July 29-August 1, may want to land for a while in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Oshkosh is approximately 86 miles north of Madison (a 1-hour-and-40-minute drive) near beautiful Lake Winnebago.

  • The Lighthouses Of Lake Winnebago

Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin’s largest lake, features six unique lighthouses. The biggest town along the lake is Oshkosh, located on the western edge. The far southern edge of Lake Winnebago is slightly more than an hour’s drive from Madison, Wisconsin, where FMCA members will meet for the 92nd Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase July 29-August 1.

  • FMCA Strikes “California Gold”

Against the backdrop of the San Bernardino Mountains, the 487-acre facility known as Fairplex welcomed motorhomers to Pomona, California, to experience these highlights and more during FMCA’s 91st Family Reunion and Motorhome Showcase, March 26-29, 2015.

  • Itasca Tribute

The Itasca Tribute and the Winnebago Brave are the nameplates affixed to two 1960s-inspired product lines that feature an entirely new design. These motorhome brands bring back fond memories for veteran RVers who may remember when the original Brave motorhome impacted the RV industry a generation ago and helped promote the concept of driving an RV rather than pulling a trailer behind a car or truck.

  • It’s In The Mail

Even RVers who are enjoying the freedom of the open road need a place to receive old-fashioned paper envelopes. Whether you are the kind of RV traveler who stays for months at a favorite campground each year, or you spend only a few weeks in any one location, having an actual physical mailing address is still a necessity in the modern world.

  • Chassis Battery Chargers

Ready to hit the road after another pleasant camping experience, you turn the key in your motorhome’s ignition and . . . pffft. Dead battery. It can happen if you’re boondocking or if you’re plugged in to a campground pedestal. But it can be avoided, too.

  • 2015 Officer Nominations
