  • Rear View: March 2011

If you’ve attended FMCA international conventions, which has been your favorite, and why?

  • The Prickly Porcupine

During the winter, when deciduous trees have lost their leaves, the bare branches provide views of things that are hidden during much of the year. Sometimes you’ll find a green growth of mistletoe, living as a parasite in the tree. Other times it will be a hawk’s nest. And sometimes it will be a sleeping porcupine.

  • Strictly St. Louis

St. Louis is a true American melting pot when it comes to cuisine, thanks to its immigrants. It began in the 1600s as a French settlement, later joined by waves of Italian, Irish, German, and Creole arrivals. Drawing upon that rich heritage, here are some St. Louis classic dishes to try in your own galley.

  • RV News & Notes: March 2011

    2011 National Park Fee-Free Days

United States Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the National Park Service will waive admission fees on selected dates throughout 2011 and encouraged all Americans to visit a national park this year.

  • Perry Family Reunion Exhibitors

As the winter of 2010-2011 draws to a close — and none too soon, many folks might say — it’s time to prepare the motorhome and hit the road. FMCA’s 85th Family Reunion & Motorhome Showcase, March 14 through 17, in Perry, Georgia, may be the perfect destination as the warm-weather travel season commences.

  • Play Your Way To Better Health

Stroll through any resort or campground, and you’ll likely agree that most RVers are sociable by nature. You’ll find people huddled together around fire pits and picnic tables everywhere you look. Chances are, you also will see plenty of spirited RVers playing board games. Games have become powerful social lubricants.

  • ‘Wunnerful, Wunnerful!’

There’s music in the air at the historic homestead near tiny Strasburg, North Dakota, and no wonder. This is where one of America’s most famous bandleaders, Lawrence Welk, was born — and learned to play his accordion. “The family got so tired of listening to Lawrence practice that they sent him out to the …

  • Rare Air

What we saw when we arrived took us by surprise. In front of us was a 1989 Airstream “classic” 370 LE motorhome. Judging by the exterior, it appeared to be in very good condition. Its two previous owners had always kept it under cover in Washington. The aluminum shell was in excellent shape and …

  • The Sundial Bridge At Redding

California has more than 23,000 bridges. There are drawbridges, suspension bridges, arch bridges, and even truss bridges, but there’s only one Sundial Bridge. It’s located in the northern California city of Redding, and as the name suggests, it’s the odd combination of a bridge and a sundial.

  • RV Products: March 2011

  • Cooling System Basics

Most people understand the importance of checking and changing the oil in their motorhome as part of the vehicle’s regular maintenance schedule. Insufficient or degraded oil can lead to poor engine performance and engine damage. The same is true for a vehicle’s cooling system, but it doesn’t seem to get equal attention.

  • Joint Rally Unites Chapters In Oregon

Fun, friendship, and merriment were experienced by members of three FMCA chapters that assembled for a joint rally at the Mtn. View Holiday Trav-L-Park in Baker City, Oregon, September 16 through 19, 2010. The chapters involved were the Snake River Valley, the Panhandle Gems, and the Rim Rock Roamers.

  • House Calls: March 2011

    Refrigerator Leveling

    Dear RV Doctor:
We recently purchased a preowned 2007 motorhome. We haven’t actually camped in it yet but have done some local driving to get used to it. We’ve read about the need to level the motorhome so the refrigerator works properly and understand the necessity.

  • Tech Talk: March 2011

    Sneaky Circuitry

I am working on an electrical problem in a friend’s 2003 Holiday Rambler Traveler 26RB2. On the wall by the outside door is a push-button switch, whose purpose is to disconnect the coach battery from everything but the refrigerator and the inverter.

  • Readers’ Forum: March 2011

    Waste Management Notes

    Dear Editor:
I enjoyed “Waste Management, Part 2” (January 2011, page 60). It seems to be timely regardless of when the reader takes the time to delve into the depths of this sensitive topic.  I would like to offer two additional suggestions.

  • This ‘N That

In the past two issues of Family Motor Coaching, I wrote about the Czarsty family and our motorhoming experiences. This month, among other topics, I want to focus on the staff who keep FMCA’s national office humming, and on Brad Koshland, F313666, FMCA’s new executive director, who began work on January 3.

  • Fleetwood Icon 24D

With apologies to Will Rogers … this nice and nimble Type C has never met a highway, a byway, a mall, or a driver it didn’t like.

  • Rear View: February 2011

Have you ever had an unusual “stowaway” in your motohome?

  • Punxsutawney Phil

With late January and early February being the coldest time of the year in North America, many people are beginning to ask how much longer winter will last. If you’re tired of the tentative predictions given by media weather forecasters who change their opinion weekly, go to the one reliable source for a definitive answer. Just ask a groundhog.

  • Make A Living In Cyberspace

  • House Calls: February 2011

    Seeping Shower Stall

    Dear RV Doctor:
We have a 2007 Damon Daybreak with a “hex” shower stall that is leaking. The leak is coming from somewhere in the glass section framing or where the shower sides, glass, and plastic connect to the bottom section.

  • Tech Talk: February 2011

    Electrical Nightmare

I have a 2003 Monaco Dynasty motorhome with an electrical problem that has puzzled just about everyone I’ve spoken with about it. It all began more than two years ago when I started the generator and the engine to return to Canada. The inverter began to sound an alarm…

  • Readers’ Forum: February 2011

    Winterizing The Water System

    Dear Editor:
In the November 2010 issue of Family Motor Coaching, the “House Calls” column (page 18) mentioned using blowout plugs to winterize your coach’s water system. These are excellent devices and will remove water from most, but not all, places in your coach.

  • First-Timers

Have you ever thought about all the adventures (or should I say misadventures?) you had when you first started motorhoming? Well, I’ve been thinking about that, and I have to admit that many of the errors we made can be traced back to me.

Walk around a fort where brave Confederate soldiers defended their way of life to the last. You can do all this and more either before or after your visit to FMCA’s next convention in Perry, Georgia.

  • “Southern Homecoming” Seminars

Increase your knowledge of motorhoming and other subjects that enhance the lifestyle when you attend FMCA’s 85th International Family Reunion & Motorhome Showcase in Perry, Georgia.

  • Tire Safety

Tires are perhaps the most overlooked and the most vulnerable component on an RV. They also are the most important. They are the vehicle’s contact point with the road, serving as the foundation for your house on wheels. As such, they should be given the same attention and care as the vehicle’s engine, suspension, transmission, and other systems.

  • Weigh Me!

When you overload a motorhome, the extreme weight can cause axle bearings to fail prematurely; shorten tire life; allow unsafe swaying in crosswinds or on curves; increase driver fatigue; and cause the suspension to sag by putting undue wear on its components.
